Baitur Rauf Mosque

The Bait Ur Rouf Mosque is a distinctive urban mosque located in Fayedabad, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for its impeccable design style and for its indigenous culture and heritage. The mosque has a capacity to accommodate 400 people. The mosque is built on an area of 654 square meters. A Bangladeshi woman named, Sufia Khatun donated part of her land for construction of the mosque and in 2005 she commissioned her granddaughter, architect Marina Tabassum, to design it. Architect Marina Tabassum completed the work in 2012.

It has been called a refuge of spirituality in urban Dhaka and received recognition for its beautiful use of natural light. Instead of traditional symbolism such as domes and minarets, the mosque relies on open space and the rich interplay of light and shadow to create a prayer space that elevates the spirit. Its construction cost was about USD 1,50,000. The mosque is made entirely of bricks, no paint or plaster work has been done here. Regular perforated walls made of red brick represent the latticework of ancient mosques.
